Healthcare facilities present a unique access control challenge. On the one hand, there is a multitude of types of users in medical facilities: medical staff with various levels of authorization, patients, guests, or service providers (e.g., catering), who move intensively inside the facility every day. On the other hand, there are rooms and areas that require the use of different levels of security and access procedures depending on their purpose (operating room, drug warehouse, emergency room, visiting room, etc.).

In the case of a hospital, the selected solution must at the same time enable uninterrupted operation of the facility 24/7, quick and easy access in selected areas (emergency department, waiting room) and effectively exclude the possibility of access in other areas (operating room). The access control system must, first of all, guarantee easy and flexible granting of authorizations to users, while ensuring a high level of security, which will translate into efficient and undisturbed operation. In addition, access control solutions support the provision of a higher level of health protection, for example by the possibility of automatically limiting the number of people in a given room/area, using contactless methods of user identification (proximity card, telephone), limiting access rights depending on the result of temperature measurement or interlocks, which reduces the spread of viruses and bacteria.

A correctly selected and implemented access control system will comprehensively secure access throughout the hospital and the flow of people in the building and will also support reducing the risk of spreading diseases.
